Letter from Christian Science Board of Directors (2008)

January, 2008

To each Christian Science teacher, and to each member of an association:
Dear Friends:

As you convene today for your annual Association meeting, we want to take this opportunity to let you know how much we value the consecration and love your presence demonstrates, both for Christian Science and for mankind.

This day represents for each of us a time for reflection, a time for individual spiritual growth, refreshment and renewal. It’s a day to bring the tithes into the storehouse and to acknowledge the power of spiritual living and understanding to take away the ills that try to thwart humanity’s natural inclination to receive the Holy Ghost, divine Science. Through your daily living of the truth, following in the footsteps of Christ Jesus, you are uniting with class-taught Christian Scientists all over the world in fulfilling the charge Mary Baker Eddy has given us: “Millions of unprejudiced minds – simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert – are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ’s name, and never fear the consequences” (S&H 570:14).

While much of the world remains asleep to the spiritual demands for individual and collective compassion and redemption, you have committed to take up the cross and follow the Christ in demonstration of the Science of being. This commitment is not only for yourself, but for the world, which has such great need of the promised Comforter.

Mrs. Eddy expected that Christian Science, the “final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing” (S&H 107), would have the effect of saving mankind. Accordingly, then, along with the understanding of this Science comes the responsibility to utilize it for awakening the world from the beliefs of sin, disease and death. Does this seem too high a calling, too great a responsibility? Then we might ask ourselves, What else can accomplish this task? Who else is equipped to do it?

May this day offer new and higher views of divine Love’s goodness and grace. May it bless and inspire each of you to heed our Leader’s call even more faithfully, and take up the standard she has placed in your willing hands.

With much love and appreciation,
